About

Robert Kwami is little known as a composer who did not begin to introduce his works at international conferences until late in his life. Kwami was a specialist in the use of non-western resources in British music education and actively encouraged the inclusion of the art music of Black composers in the schools' curriculum.

Kwami was Professor in Music at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He had previously taught in schools, colleges and universities in Ghana, Nigeria, England, Wales and Scotland. He came from a Ghanaian musical family and wrote over 30 compositions, most of which are for solo instruments and small ensembles including choirs. He also produced over 65 publications in academic and professional journals. Dr. Kwami was director of the Centre for Intercultural Music Arts (CIMA) based in London and editor of 'Intercultural Music and Intercultural Musicology'. He passed away in March 2004 in Pretoria.
